Osun Security Council Adopts ‘Stringent Measures’ After Night of Political Brigandage

OSOGBO, Osun State — Following a chaotic 24-hour window characterized by sporadic gunfire and the widespread destruction of campaign materials, the Osun State Security Council has moved to implement a "containment strategy" to halt rising political violence.

The emergency council meeting, chaired by Governor Ademola Adeleke (represented by Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi), lasted several hours at the State Secretariat on Monday. The session was a direct response to a coordinated wave of vandalism that swept through Osogbo in the early hours of May 11, 2026.

Governor Confronts Police Leadership

In a rare public display of friction between the state executive and law enforcement, Governor Adeleke reportedly berated the Osun State Commissioner of Police. The Governor expressed dismay that "political charlatans" were allowed to carry out acts of lawlessness for hours—including shooting sporadically at the State Secretariat entrance—without prompt intervention or arrests.

"We must question why hoodlums attack public properties while law enforcement agents refuse to make arrests or prevent such threats to public peace," the Governor stated through a release by the Commissioner for Information, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi.

Allegations Against Opposition

The state government has squarely blamed the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the unrest. Specific allegations were leveled against a notorious figure identified as Asiri Eniba, who is accused of leading a gang of armed hoodlums to deface and destroy billboards belonging to both the Governor and the ACCORD party.

Key Security Developments from the Meeting:

• High-Level Attendance: Top commanders from the Army, Air Force, Police, DSS, Immigration, and NDLEA were present.

• Police Promise: In defense, the police command pledged to host an immediate roundtable with chairmen of all political parties to de-escalate tensions.

• Zero Tolerance Policy: The council adopted "stringent professional security actions" to ensure that no individual or group, regardless of political affiliation, remains above the law.

The Road to August 15, 2026

With the Osun governorship election set for August 15, 2026, analysts warn that the current "billboard war" is a precursor to a volatile campaign season. Barr. Samuel Ojo, Special Adviser on Security Matters, emphasized that the state would no longer tolerate "unprovoked attacks" on citizens or public property.

The APC has yet to issue a formal rebuttal to these specific emergency council resolutions, though previous statements from the party have dismissed such allegations as "diversionary tactics."

As of Monday evening, security presence has been beefed up around the State Secretariat and major intersections in Osogbo to prevent a recurrence of the pre-dawn violence.
