The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified 385 security flashpoints and about 200 difficult-to-access locations across Osun State as part of its preparations for the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

The disclosure was made by the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, during a stakeholders' meeting convened by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 11, Adegoke Fayoade, in Osogbo.

According to Babalola, the commission carried out a comprehensive risk assessment across all 30 local government areas of the state, identifying locations that may pose security challenges during the election. She said the findings have been shared with security agencies to enable them to deploy personnel strategically and ensure the safety of voters, election officials and electoral materials.

The REC explained that INEC has also conducted risk management training for its officials as the election enters what she described as the "amber zone," with additional field officers being deployed to validate security assessments on the ground.

She noted that approximately 200 communities were classified as difficult terrains because of poor road networks and limited accessibility, requiring special logistics and security planning on election day.

Babalola disclosed that she had personally visited 29 of the 30 local government areas in the state, including Ila and Ifedayo, where recent security concerns such as kidnapping had been reported. She said security agencies had assured the commission that adequate measures would be in place to guarantee peaceful elections.

On logistics, the REC revealed that INEC had already received about 75 per cent of the materials required for the governorship poll, while non-sensitive materials had been distributed to designated locations.

She reaffirmed the commission's commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive election, while appealing to security agencies to intensify efforts to reassure residents and encourage voter participation.

The meeting was attended by heads of security agencies, religious leaders, media representatives and other stakeholders, who discussed collaborative measures to ensure a peaceful electoral process in Osun State.

The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August 15, 2026, with political parties already intensifying campaigns ahead of the poll.
