Governor Ademola Adeleke has dismissed claims by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, regarding the state's energy sector, insisting that Osun already has a comprehensive electricity law and energy development framework under implementation. The governor, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, described the APC candidate's assertion that Osun lacks an electricity law and strategic energy agenda as misleading and uninformed. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the governor said the state government had, between 2024 and 2025, undertaken extensive consultations with stakeholders across various sectors to develop a robust legal framework for the electricity sector following the devolution of energy matters to states. According to the statement, the process involved multiple stages of stakeholder engagement, culminating in a validation workshop before the proposed legislation was forwarded to the Osun State House of Assembly as an executive bill. The Assembly subsequently subjected the bill to public hearings, allowing contributions from industry stakeholders and members of the public before passing it into law. Governor Adeleke noted that after legislative approval, the bill underwent executive review and was eventually assented to, with the signing ceremony receiving wide media coverage. The law, according to the state government, establishes a comprehensive policy and legal framework for power sector development in Osun State. It provides for the creation of an electricity market system, promotes alternative energy sources, and establishes a state electricity regulatory agency. The regulatory agency is empowered to issue licences for power generation by private investors and oversee relationships among electricity generation companies, consumers, and the distribution company serving the state. The governor maintained that the existing law positions Osun to fully harness opportunities within the evolving electricity market and drive economic growth through improved energy access. He further questioned the APC candidate's understanding of the energy sector, arguing that any meaningful electricity agenda must be built upon a solid legal and policy framework, which the current administration has already put in place. The statement added that the implementation phase of the state's electricity law is ongoing, while also highlighting other initiatives of the Adeleke administration in sectors such as digital economy and climate change. "Osun already has a robust electricity energy agenda whose implementation is already ongoing," the governor was quoted as saying. The development comes amid increasing political exchanges ahead of the state's governorship contest, with both the ruling administration and opposition parties seeking to showcase their policy credentials to voters.
