In a decisive move to uphold the sanctity of the traditional institution, Governor Ademola Adeleke has approved the immediate deposition of Oba Joseph Olugbenga Oloyede as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government.
The removal follows the Governor’s receipt of a Certified True Copy (CTC) of a judgment from the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio. While the Osun State Government had previously exercised caution, the arrival of official records has provided the legal foundation for the monarch’s removal under the state's Chief Law.
“The action was predicated on the need to maintain peace, order, and good government, as well as preserve the honour and integrity of the royal stool which has been brought into disrepute and public odium.” — Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Spokesperson to the Governor.
THE CASE: $4.2 MILLION PANDEMIC FRAUD
The fall of the 62-year-old monarch, who holds dual Nigerian and American citizenship, stems from a sophisticated scheme to defraud the U.S. government. According to federal court records:
-
The Scheme: Between 2020 and 2022, Oloyede used his businesses and tax consultancy to submit 38 fraudulent applications for COVID-19 relief funds (PPP and EIDL).
-
The Proceeds: He successfully diverted over $4.2 million, using the funds to acquire land, build a luxury home in Medina, Ohio, and purchase high-end vehicles.
-
The Verdict: Having pleaded guilty to wire fraud and making false tax returns, he was sentenced to 56 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and a restitution order of over $4.4 million.
VACANCY AND SUCCESSION
With the signing of the Deposition Order on May 7, 2026, the throne of Ipetumodu is officially vacant. Governor Adeleke has directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to initiate the traditional and legal processes for a new appointment.
This landmark deposition sends a stern message across Nigeria's traditional institutions that proven criminal conduct, regardless of where it occurs, is incompatible with the moral authority of the royal stool.
