The management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has dismissed what it described as misleading reports surrounding the death of final-year Criminology student, Grace Osunlakin, saying she was not taken to the university's health centre on the night of the incident.
According to the university, Grace successfully defended her final-year project on June 23 and showed no signs of illness while on campus. Later that night, after returning from a Christian fellowship, she complained of stomach pain and later collapsed at her off-campus residence.
UNIOSUN stated that efforts to take her to a hospital were delayed by movement restrictions caused by an unannounced Oro festival. She was eventually taken to the Community Health Centre in Ikija, where she was confirmed dead before being transferred to Goshen Specialist Hospital in Ondo, which also certified her dead on arrival.
The university noted that Grace had a documented history of asthma since her first year and maintained that she was never taken to the university medical centre during the emergency. Management extended condolences to her family and said it would continue to review the circumstances surrounding her death.
