The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Alhaji Ardo Risku, and his son, Ibrahim, have been killed by suspected gunmen while returning from a peace meeting in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state.

According to security sources, the victims were attacked near Ahimeni in the Okodu area shortly after attending a meeting convened to promote peaceful coexistence among communities in the area.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama reported that the assailants ambushed the father and son on their way home, killing both of them at the scene before fleeing.

The peace meeting was reportedly part of ongoing efforts to strengthen dialogue between herders and farming communities and reduce recurring tensions in parts of Benue State.

The killing has heightened concerns over insecurity in the state, where violent attacks and communal clashes have continued to claim lives despite several peace initiatives.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to officially identify those responsible for the attack, while investigations were said to be underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

The incident has drawn condemnation from community leaders and stakeholders, who warned that attacks on participants in peace-building efforts could undermine ongoing reconciliation initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace in Benue.
