The Federal Government has completed the full rehabilitation of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to restore critical road infrastructure and enhance connectivity across Nigeria's South-East and South-South regions.
The strategic highway, which links Enugu State through Abia State to Port Harcourt in Rivers State, serves as one of the country's busiest transport corridors, facilitating the movement of goods, services, and passengers across the region.
The rehabilitation project was executed under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works, led by the Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, as part of the government's broader commitment to improving the nation's road network and supporting economic growth.
According to project details, the rehabilitation covered major sections of the expressway, including the reconstruction of failed portions, asphalt resurfacing, drainage improvements, and other structural upgrades designed to enhance the durability and functionality of the road.
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to significantly improve travel conditions for motorists, reduce journey times, and enhance safety along the corridor. The project is also anticipated to boost commercial activities by facilitating the efficient movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, and other economic resources between the South-East and South-South regions.
Stakeholders have described the completion of the project as a major intervention that will contribute to regional integration and economic development while addressing longstanding challenges faced by road users on the expressway.
With the rehabilitation now completed, commuters and businesses are expected to benefit from smoother traffic flow, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and improved access to key economic centres along the route.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to sustaining investments in critical infrastructure projects across the country to support national development and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.
